SUMMARY Fifteen patients with severe uraemia from chronic prostatic obstruction have been treated by hemodialysis pre‐operatively. The value of dialysis in these subjects is discussed. Not only was dialysis a life‐saving measure in some cases, it also allowed operation to be carried out safely in patients who would otherwise have been poor surgical risks. Moreover, one‐stage prostatectomy was possible in all cases and the stay in hospital was shortened. We should like to thank Professor L. N. Pyrah and Mr F. P. Raper for helpful advice and for allowing us to publish the case histories of those patients admitted under their care.
