SUMMARY Of a group of ten rats with developing open hydronephrosis and opposite nephrectomy six survived for fifty days. In all six, histological examination of the solitary hydronephroses revealed dilatation of the nephrons with no evidence of atrophy and little fibrosis. Tubular atrophy and interstitial fibrosis occurred in the open hydronephroses of six control animals in which the contralateral kidney was not removed. This work was supported by a research grant from the Post‐Graduate Committee in Medicine, the University of Sydney. I wish to thank the Department of Illustration for the preparation of the photographs and photomicrographs. I am indebted to Mr Marshall Douglas and the technical staff of the Department of Pathology, University of Sydney, for the histological preparations.
