SUMMARY Experiments performed on seven dogs in which the ureteric orifice was isolated from the bladder showed that:– 1. The ureter responded to rising external pressure by increased contraction amplitude and frequency. 2. The normal ureteric mucosal flap valve was rendered incompetent if the position of the orifice relative to the intramural ureter was altered. 3. The detrusor muscle had no influence on the closure of the intramural ureter.
