SUMMARY Eighty‐one cases of prostatectomy (approximately 78 per cent, of a consecutive series) were sent back to the ward from the theatre without an indwelling catheter, and normal micturition followed in all but seven of these cases. None required blood transfusions either pre‐operatively or post‐operatively. Of twenty‐two elective cases with a previously sterile urine eighteen maintained sterility. Hypotensive anaesthesia facilitated the surgical technique by providing a relatively bloodless operative field with no apparent added risk to the patient.
