SUMMARY A method for electromyographic recording from the external urethral sphincter and the bulbocavernosus muscle is described. The normal external urethral sphincter and bulbocavernosus were investigated, and were found to show the same electromyographic characteristics. They did not diver in this respect from previously investigated muscles of the extremities, such as the biceps brachii and the first dorsal interosseous. Both muscles were activated when the subjects coughed or contracted the muscles as in voluntary interruption of micturition.
