However, there are cases met with, such as contracted pelvis, with infected uteri, where it would be impossible to do the classical vaginal Cesarean section of Doderlein, for these he advocates the trans-peritoneal method of Franke, or the extra-peritoneal one of Latzko. The former is difficult, and in the main consists in sewing the peritoneum of the parietes to that of the uterus before incising it. The latter is more favoured and consists in opening the uterus by finding one's way below the fold of the peritoneum along the left side of the bladder. Out of 137 Caesarean extra-peritoneal operations collected by Eisenreich, nine patients died which gives a mortality of 3'7 per cent, and 12'G children were born alive.
