A new myctophid species, Diaphus pallidus sp.n., was captured in the Gulf of Aden. The species can be distinguished from most of its congeners by the high number of dorsal fin rays and low number of gill rakers. It can be distinguished from D. lucidus (Goode & Bean) by the form of the operculum and by the situation of some of the body photophores.
