A ctenostomatous bryozoan found in German coastal waters at a first glance showed similarities to ‘Nolella pusilla’. During cultivation experiments this species exhibited characters requiring a new taxonomic position. This species lacks cystid appendages and cannot form anastomoses of zooid buds by histological fusions typical for the Arachnidioidea. Therefore, this species is not a Nolella. An isolated double row of dorsoventral muscle fibres in young zooids reveals that the new species is related to Paludicella articulata. The find is described as a new species and genus and placed in its own new family: Panolicella nutans , Panolicellidae, referable to the Paludicelloidea s.str. sensu Jebram. Cyclindroecium pusillum Hincks, 1880 and Nolella pusilla sensu Ryland must be considered as species incertae sedis , because no type specimens exist and both descriptions are insufficient to allow an unambiguous identification according to modern requirements in the taxonomy of the Ctenostomata. Independently from the status of Nolella pusilla , identification of the species found now in the German Bight as the same species as that by Hincks (1880) and Ryland (19%) is most improbable; their similarities are only superficial.
