Paragnathorhynchus subterraneus Meixner is redescribed and identified with Prognathorhynchus stilofer Schilke. The paired tubular extracapsular secretory sacs in the proboscis apparatus of Aculeorhynchus glandulis Schilke are interpreted as evolutionary derivatives of intracapsular secretory vesicles in the proboscis of some Gnathorhynchidae. Aculeorhynchus Schilke is interpreted as an apomorph sister taxon of a group of taxa in the Gnathorhynchidae.
