The lysianassid genus Centromedon G. O. Sars, 1891 is redescribed. The genus comprises five species, viz. C. pumilus (Lilljeborg, 1865), C. productus (Goës, 1866), C. typhlops (G. O. Sars. 1879), C. calcaratus (G. O. Sars, 1879) and C. pavor Barnard, 1966. The new diagnosis reflects' the intrageneric variation. Such an approach to a definition at generic level is discussed. Full redescriptions of C. pumilus, C. productus, C. typhlops and C. calcaratus are given. The redescription of C. typhlops is based on material from the Norwegian basin collected by the French‐Swedish expedition (NORBI) in 1975.
