The type series of Ranatra compressicollis has been critically studied for the first time since its original description with particular reference to its unusual features. The genus Amphischizops proposed by Montandon for this species in a note after the original description is made a synonym of Ranatra . A brief resumé of the New World Ranatra with special emphasis on the male genitalia compared with Old World species is followed by a discussion of the generic concepts of the Nepidae which tends to show that certain features of the male genitalia are of little value at the generic or subfamily level as an aid to the classification of the Nepidae.
