Three variations in the caudal skeleton of Albula vulpes (L.) are described and compared with earlier descriptions. The caudal skeleton of Albula is regarded as a primitive stage of the pleurostylar type, characteristic of clupeoids. This does not necessarily indicate close relationship with the clupeoids. A comparison with the Elopoidei, the caudal skeleton of which is considered a primitive stage of the stegural type, characteristic of some Sal‐monoidei, excludes in the opinion of the author the supposed close relationship between Albuloidei and Elopoidei.
