Abstract Scanning electron microscopy and the Bodian protargol technique are applied to the cell body of a tintinnid for the first time. The somatic ciliature, the membranelles, the pulsating vacuole, the preoral cavity and the invagination at the posterior end of the cell body are demonstrated for the species Parafavella denticulata (Ehrenberg 1840). The correlation between SEM and the protargol impregnations is striking, and the presumptive taxonomic and phylogenetic value of these methods for the study of tintinnids is emphasized.
