In June 2008, Colorectal Disease was awarded its first Impact Factor of 2.059. The figure was calculated by dividing the number of world-wide citations in 2007 to articles published in 2005 ⁄ 2006 by the total number of articles published in the same period. Reviews were more often cited than original articles but the overall performance has resulted in a very pleasing Impact Factor. In the ISI Thomson Scientific subject category of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Colorectal Disease is now ranked 28th out of 50 Journals. We are asking for it to be listed among the relevant surgical journals and will be interested to see where it comes if the request is accepted. With this Impact Factor after just under 10 years of publication, a figure that compares very favourably with the other colorectal journals, Colorectal Disease is now set on increasing it. This will be achieved only by publishing ever more high quality articles. The Journal should now become more attractive to authors who are themselves increasingly mindful of the need to select a journal indexed by the major referencing bodies. Over the last year editorial policy has focused successfully on reducing the time interval from submission to an editorial decision to offer as good a service to authors as we possibly can. We have also brought in changes in content including expert Commentaries and improved instructions to authors, which we hope will make submission more user-friendly. Colorectal Disease looks forward to the future with confidence now that we have such a respectable Impact Factor.
