There appears to be a growing expectation from speech and language therapists and VOCA users that the provision of a communication system alone is no longer sufficient. Demands for vocabulary packages to use with a communication aid are increasing. Are such packages the answers to clinician's or user's needs? Given that communication is personal and individual, how flexible can packages be in terms of vocabulary offered and idiosyncrasies in linguistic repertoire for the user? This paper provides an overview of recent research into vocabulary use with communication aids, and examines the possibility of identifying a ‘core vocabulary’ with customisable user options to personalise it. It is hoped that these ideas will stimulate discussion on the topic.
