Speech and language therapists at all levels are working in depth with patients, clients and their families suffering from varying degrees of loss. They are also employed by institutions having their own problem of loss stemming from changes, cost improvements, and competition. All this subjects them and their managers to a degree of stress that could result in burn‐out and an exodus from the profession. This was highlighted by a recent case which cited employer's responsibiity in employee risk management. This paper presents a multidisciplinary pilot project setting up a staff risk management and support programme, its effects and benefits.
