School‐based speech and language therapy for children with special needs attending mainstream school is becoming a more common mode of service delivery. This paper describes how a model of service for school‐based working was planned, developed and implemented in consultation with the Local Education Authority (LEA), Health Authority Purchasers, parents and other professionals. The paper is divided into three parts to reflect different aspects of the service development process. Part I explores the consultation and planning process involved in developing the initial model of service and the audit of the early stages of service implementation. The results of the audit and their implications for the service are discussed. Part II describes the planning, implementation and evaluation of a teacher training programme developed as an integral part of the service. Part III outlines the collaborative process involved in refining referral criteria. The paper emphasises the value of collaborative working with both the Education Services and parents in the development of such a therapy service.
