ABSTRACT In 1989 the authors carried out a pilot study to document the communication development in children with Angelman's syndrome. This produced useful findings for speech and language therapists with implications for therapy programmes. The pilot study also raised other questions, including (1) Whether these children have difficulties in planning and executing motor activities, including speech; (2) Whether there is a more fundamental problem of using communication for social interaction; or (3) Whether the primary difficulty was one of low developmental age. It was therefore decided to devise a questionnaire to be distributed through the Angelman Syndrome Support Group. Over 80 questionnaires have already been completed and provide data on levels of language comprehension, methods of communication, functions of communication and a feeding history. After analysis of this information a group of children will be selected for further in‐depth assessment in order to answer some of the questions above and to describe the profiles of the children's communication. This will be linked to the genetic history where an earlier study has indicated some differences between familial and non‐familial cases. Preliminary data will be presented and early findings discussed.
