— The occurrence of brittle stable crack growth before unstable fracture was demonstrated with the aid of heat‐tinting, for a ferritic matrix super duplex stainless steel which had been age‐hardened at 475°C. The critical crack tip opening displacement for stable crack growth, i.e. the crack initiation toughness, was measured using the direct‐current‐potential drop crack monitoring technique. A quantitative model for the effect of temperature and age‐hardening on the brittle crack initiation toughness is described.
