This paper describes the early work directed to understanding fatigue crack growth behaviour and the seminal role played by Regis Pelloux, at both the Boeing Aircraft Co and MIT, and other researchers in various parts of the world. From this beginning, fatigue life assessment procedures for engineering components and structures developed and still continues.
