This paper describes a fully automatic short crack monitoring system used to study the growth of short cracks in Waspaloy at ambient temperature. Freely initiated fatigue cracks as small as 34 μ were detected using this system. Frequent monitoring enabled crack growth to be recorded over 2000 cycle increments. Several methods of data presentation were reviewed, the most appropriate being a linear plot of growth rate vs crack length.
