Abstract Twenty patients admitted to our hospital because of hyperemesis gravidarum were given psychiatric assessment. More than half of the subjects had not planned their pregnancies, and most of them were either ambivalent or rejecting towards their fetuses. All except one had significant psychosocial problems complicating their pregnancies. Psychiatric assessment and counselling is recommended as part of the management of severe vomiting of pregnancy.
