The experience of epidural analgesia in a new teaching hospital is reviewed. The procedure was found to be an effective means of pain relief, and facilitated instrumental delivery in high risk cases. Both the medical and nursing staff found it acceptable and did not increase the workload, while the labour process was easier to manage. Majority of the mothers were satisfied with the procedure and with adequate preparation and precautions, there were no serious complication. The authors would recommend this procedure to obstetricians working in the Far East.
