Bromocriptine, an ergot‐alkaloid derivative which was marketed by Sandoz in the early 1970's at about the same time as prolactin (PRL) was able to be measured by new and sensitive radioimmunoassays, has now become the mainstay of treatment for patients with hyperprolactinaemia, with or without pituitary tumour, and for a number of other gynaecological disorders. Although it is spectacularly effective in patients with elevated PRL levels, its usefulness in patients with normal PRL levels is not so clear. This review aims to provide the reader with information concerning the current usefulness of bromocriptine in the treatment of various gynaecologic disorders, but does not attempt to evaluate its usefulness for non‐gynaecologic conditions such as acromegaly, disordered spermatogenesis, impotence or Parkinson's disease.
