The clinical efficacy of pivmecillinam was evaluated in the treatment of complicated urinary tract infections occurring during prophylactic initial therapy immediately after radical hysterectomy with pelvic lymphadenectomy in 29 patients with uterine cervical cancer. Pivmecillinam was administered 400mg daily for 2 weeks. Overall clinical evaluation was done in 24 cases. The result was excellent in 5, good in 10, and a failure in 9 cases, for an overall efficacy rate of 62.5%, based on the assessments of pyuria and bacteriuria. Side effects in patients who received pivmecillinam were not remarkable. Pivmecillinam appears to be useful for maintenance therapy against complicated urinary tract infection in gynecology. Clinical considerations concerning the bacteriological findings are also discussed.
