Of 87 pregnant women with genital bleeding who were examined in weeks 5 to 35 of gestation, ultrasound studies revealed abnormal echo‐free areas in 3 cases with blighted ovum, in 1 case with intrauterine fetal death, and in 13 cases with a living fetus. In 2 of the latter cases, the fetuses died later. Thus use of ultrasound is helpful in assessing progress of pregnancy and outcome for the fetus.
