Genital malignancy in association with intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUDs) has rarely been reported. In this paper 21 cases of cervical cancer in IUD users are presented. Close examination of the resected uteri revealed no direct contact of the IUD with the cancer nest and no abnormality suggesting malignancy around the device. These findings seem to support the general view that IUDs have no oncogenic potential on the uterine cervix. Nevertheless, Pap tests must be performed annually in healthy IUD wearers to facilitate early diagnosis of malignancy.
