Studies on stromal cells of chorionic villi, whose functions are still unknown, lag behind investigations on trophoblasts. Hofbauer cells were examined by light and electron microscopy, and the frequency of their appearance in 31 cases of normal villi was compared with that in 9 cases of hydatidiform moles and 6 of invasive moles. The uptake of 3 H‐thymidine was also examined. Morphologically and functionally, it was suggested that Hofbauer cells in the villous stroma possessed macrophage‐like characteristics.
