Four cases of proven pituitary necrosis following haemorrhage and shock of obstetric origin were investigated. The clinical, pathophysiological and endocrinological evidences suggest that the severity of the syndrome depends upon the extent of pituitary damage. In all the cases the trophic‐target organ responses were at low EBB as evidenced by the low titres of the hormones. The symptoms and signs of pituitary cachexia are essentially the sum of the deficiency symptoms of the endocrine glands dependent upon pituitary function. However the slight variations in the different target organ response may be due to the differences in the frequency of necrosis .
