SUMMARY Among 721 patients following amniotomy, (a) amniotomy — established I labour (b) amniotomy — delivery intervals, and (c) duration of labour were related to the time interval between amniotomy and *Syntocinon administration with reference to the following maternal factors: age; parity; stage of gestation; indication for induction of labour; state of cervix; and parity plus state of cervix. It is found that the state of the cervix and parity significantly affected the outcome of labour, but the other factors were of little or no importance .
