A series of 413 cases of cancer of the ovary from the New South Wales Gynaecological Cancer Registry was reviewed in relation to the epidemiological features of incidence and mortality. Carcinoma of the ovary was the third commonest female genital tract cancer (123%). The pathological composition of the tumours were as follows: papillary (44.8%), endometriod, etc. (23.0%), mutinous (12.1%), anaplastic and undefined (12.5%), granuiosa and thecoma (5.5%), germ cell (1.9%). The cumulative relative 5 year survival was 32%. The effect of ovarian conservation in patients with Stage la tumours, the effect of rupture at operation, ascitis, and different modalities of treatment on the prognosis were discussed. Work relating to chemotherapy after sensitivity testing for the appropriate cytostatic agent with extended survival rates and a programme for a modern approach to full therapy in the later stages were described.
