Interventional cardiologists from C hina first arrived at the E pworth H ospital in M elbourne for training in percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty in 1988. Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty was initially performed in C hina in 1981 in X ian. In those days, angioplasty balloons and catheters that were brought into C hina mainly by foreign experts were used repeatedly until they were broken. D r. A ntonio C olombo was invited to visit B eijing, C hina, in 1998 to demonstrate coronary stenting at the C haoyang H ospital. By 2010, more than 300 000 cases of percutaneous coronary interventions ( PCIs ) had been performed throughout C hina. If the current rate of PCIs per population in the W est was to be applied in C hina, more than 4 million PCIs should have been performed annually.
