The two short articles on this page and the next arise from an acquaintance between two people interested in writing that began in first‐year medicine. Andrew Riemer went on to succeed as a writer. Graham Macdonald completed Medicine and became an academic nephrologist. These reflections on what they didn’t become contrast with accounts of careers and success we’re more used to in what's been called ‘ success literature ’. There may be a richer vein to be mined in the ‘ changed my mind ’ literature, given the diversity of stories behind these decisions. Editor's Note
