Summary: A patient showing a remarkable recovery from proven severe herpes simplex virus (HSV) encephalitis after the administration of intravenous cytosine arabinoside (cytarabine) is described. The dosage used produced marked but temporary haemopoietic depression. This report is a contribution to the limited experience so far published of the use of this drug in the treatment of HSV encephalitis.
