Summary: The advantages of continuous EEG monitoring, during carotid endarterectomy are discussed. Observations of the types of EEG change seen when the common carotid artery is clamped are described, with the use of the EEG to indicate the adequacy of collateral circulation or the necessity for inserting a temporary shunt in the internal carotid artery.
