Summary: Sera from 72 Papua New Guinean patients with hepatocellular carcinoma were tested for alpha 1 fetoprotein, hepatitis B antigen and antibody by sensitive techniques including radio‐immunoassay. Alpha 1 fetoprotein was detected in 98% of samples and Hepatitis B antigen in 82%. Hepatitis B antibody was present in only 2.8% of samples. The implications of these findings are considered.
