Summary: A study of patients with non‐functioning chromophobe adenomas was commenced in 1969 to assess whether earlier diagnosis would be facilitated by attention to manifestations of endocrine dysfunction. This study shows that patients with these tumours usually present with neurological symptoms, often visual impairment, but many of them still repeatedly seek advice before the correct diagnosis is made. It is also apparent that clinical manifestations of pituitary in‐sufficiency usually accompany the neurological disturbances and in some cases are even the initial complaint. It is concluded that, if earlier diagnosis and treatment is to be achieved before irreversible visual defects occur, a high index of suspicion is necessary with attention being paid to evidence of pituitary insufficiency.
