Summary: The use of L‐dopa in the treatment of Parkinson's Disease was based on two observations. The induction of Parkinsonism in man during treatment with reserpine and the reduction in the striatal dopamine in patients dying with involutional and post‐ence‐phalitic Parkinson's Disease. Experience in using L‐dopa in several overseas centres was surveyed, while the significance of the side‐effects produced by the drug was appraised. Improvement in the disabling symptoms of the disease was noted in approximately 70 to 80 per cent of patients during extended treatment with L‐dopa.
