Summary: Lactose barium study and/ or lactose tolerance test were used to screen for milk intolerance in cases presenting with chronic (nervous) diarrhoea. Of 19 cases, 18 were found to be intolerant to milk, showing that lactase deficiency is a very important aetio‐logical factor in chronic (nervous) diarrhoea in Singapore. Withdrawal of milk was followed by rapid improvement in all the affected cases.
