This book provides a comprehensive overview of the role of induction chemotherapy for advanced malignant disease in both solid and hollow viscus tumours. Both editors have a well-deserved international reputation in this area with a particular reference to regional therapy. For this reason, there is a significant and understandable bias towards this form of therapy. There are some impressive coloured pictures of regression of advanced head and neck malignancy by regional therapy which will impress the reader. They have engaged a large group of authors who have given a perspective in their areas of expertise. This book, as a result, provides a collection of what is possible and what can be achieved. It does not pretend to be a book based on a high level of evidence but this does not lessen its impact. For example, there are some fascinating circuitries described to provide isolated hepatic and pelvic perfusion therapy with venous salvage, which reflects the cutting edge inventiveness of the authors. There are 28 chapters that address regional hyperthermia therapy, cryotherapy, head and neck perfusion therapy, gross peritoneal disease, advanced gastro-oesophageal disease, ovarian malignancy, hepatic and lung perfusion, isolated limb perfusion as well as induction therapy for breast malignancy, sarcoma and pancreatic cancer. It is a book that any surgeon involved in the management of cancer should read to give them insight into what might be considered for patients whose disease is beyond the reach of standard care. This book should not be considered the definitive text on ‘how to do it’. It is more an exposé that demonstrates what might be possible for a small number of patients with advanced disease in expert units.
