Orthopaedic surgery in New Zealand was essentially a by‐product of the First World War; and Walter Robertson, who was designated ‘medical officer to the massage department’ in 1922 [and soon renamed ‘officer in charge of the orthopaedic department’] was the first orthopaedic surgeon in Wellington. This paper traces the growth of orthopaedic services in Wellington to the point where 20 surgeons in active practice are now listed as working in the Wellington region.
