Qualifications for surgeons have evolved through several centuries. Particularly with dramatic changes in the science of medicine over the period of John Hunter and the early 1800's, their education and training could be seen to be in a state of flux. The characters and contributions of these men are presented in the context of college diplomas to which they attached their authority.
