The Head and Neck Group of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons had rather stormy beginnings at a time when the practice of head and neck surgery was dominated by ‘turf’ issues. It became an independent multidisciplinary group within the College and since its inception the Group has been usefully engaged in several professional issues for the College. Definite progress has been made over 20 years, but there have also been lost opportunities. The time has probably come for a review of the current status and future direction of the Group and its relations with other professional groups practising head and neck oncological surgery in Australia and New Zealand.
