The case of 54 percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainages performed at The Royal Melbourne Hospital were reviewed. There were 15 preoperative (short term) and 35 long term drainages. In 50 cases successful drainage was established. There was a satisfactory fall in the mean serum bilirubin levels after the procedure. A variety of complications both minor and major were encountered.
