A small personal series of nine private patients in whom appendicostomy was used to protect colonic anastomoses is presented. Because of the slightly experimental nature of the procedure, each procedure was first discussed with the patient and with the referring doctor. The conclusion is drawn that the procedure is inadequate for the task
