This article evaluates the ability of various amino acids commonly found in meat extract to stimulate the release of hydrochloric acid from the stomach. This ability is compared with that resulting from endogenous and exogenous gastrin and histamine stimulation. It is proposed that the ainino acids glycine and beta‐alanine be used as alternatives to meat extract in tests of antral function.
