This paper assesses the value of the ultrasonic flow meter in the diagnosis and management of peripheral arterial disease. The principles of the use of ultrasound are discussed and illustrated with the use of the Parkes Model 806 Directional Doppler instrument. The four types of velocity flow patterns are described, and the clinical applications indicated with particular reference to postoperative monitoring and the hœmodynamic assessment of reconstructive surgery.
