The prophylactic effect of lowaosc heparm ( Calciparine ) administered subcutaneously to a series of 50 patients undergoing a variety of surgical operations was studied. Four out of a control group of 25 patients ( 16% ) developed deep vem thrombosis, while no patient in the treated group developed it. There was no evidence of pulmonary embolus in either group of patients. Twenty out of the 25 patients who received Calciparine had a complication related to the treatment, in five this was severe enough to cause the Calciparine administration to be stopped.
