The Kocher manœuvre is an easily performed, safe and highly effective technique which should be used in most operations on the biliary tree (the possible exception would be cholecystectomy for acute cholecystitis), in all operations involving either gastric resection or pyloroplasty, whenever the duodenum is to be opened for either pancreatic duct exploration and pancreatography or retrograde exploration of the common bile duct, and whenever the state of the pancreas is to be assessed.
