The supradiaphragmatic vagus and its abdominal branches have been subjected to fibre counts both in normal dogs and in dogs that have undergone proximal vagal sections resulting in fibre degeneration. As a result of these studies, the absolute numbers of afferent, efferent and adventitial fibres present in the vagus nerve at these levels have been established
